A. Šemeta – bus ar nebus..
Šią savaitę Europos Parlamente vyksta kandidatų į Europos komisijos narius prisistatymai. S&D grupės informacija po A. Šemetos klausymo:
Serious concerns about the capability of the Commission candidate nominee in charge of the fight against fraud were thrown up at a parliamentary hearing in Brussels today.
S&D Euro MPs held back from outright rejection of Algirdas Semeta. Discussions are to continue at high level in the group this afternoon before a final decision is reached.
Said S&D spokesperson on budgetary control Jens Geier: “Mr Semeta failed to provide detail on how he will reform the EU fraud squad, OLAF, and he also failed to explain how to improve management of EU funds by the EU and its member states. He was inadequate too, on the code of conduct for commissioners.”
Other group members said that when asked about tax, another important part of his responsibilities, Mr Semeta again gave unconvincing and unsatisfactory answers with little or no detail. They singled out his failure to deal with fighting tax havens and said he was just as poor on financial transaction tax or corporate taxation.
Said S&D Group vice-president in charge of the hearings, Hannes Swoboda: “Mr Semeta scored a bare pass on tackling counterfeit goods. But the overwhelming impression was disappointment which leads us to question his suitability to be nominated for this important Commission portfolio.
“The group will take a final decision on the new Commission at a meeting in Strasbourg next week. This was a disappointing and deeply unsatisfactory performance.”
